Ford on Thursday announced
Ford has reportedly cut a shift at its Michigan Assembly Plant, laying off approximately 700 employees.
The Wayne plant currently produces the Focus, Focus ST, Focus Electric and C-Max hybrid and C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid. The company does not break down sales figures for its hybrid and EV variants, but both nameplates have experienced overall sales declines in the first quarter. Fusion sales fell by nearly eight percent to 71, 470 units in the first three months of the year, while the C-Max dropped by more than 22 percent to 4, 305 units during the same period.

"We are reminded from time to time that our industry is cyclical and volatile to market conditions, " said UAW-Ford VP Jimmy Settles in a statement published by The Detroit News.

The production shift is said to affect 673 hourly employees and 27 salaried workers, though some are expected to serve as summer-vacation substitutes at other Ford plants in the region.

Analysts have blamed relatively low gasoline prices for a general slide in hybrid and EV sales for some automakers. Ford does not appear to be experiencing the same issues with its popular F-150 pickup, which recently began rolling off the assembly line at a second US factory.
